This course aims to develop your understanding of the importance of literacy, not only across the curriculum but also specifically in maths education. All teachers, regardless of subject, are equally responsible for incorporating literacy in lessons.

Poor literacy skills can hold a person back at every stage of their life. As a child, they will struggle to be successful at school, as a young adult, they will struggle in the job market, and as a parent, they won’t be able to support their own child’s learning.

The course is separated into three modules of learning:

Module One: Literacy Across the Curriculum
In this module, we will explore the importance of literacy across the curriculum, not solely as skills taught and developed in English classrooms. We will consider the importance of literacy, vocabulary and pre-teaching vocabulary.

Module Two: The Importance of Literacy and Oracy in Mathematics
In this module, we will introduce the concept of disciplinary literacy and consider the importance of literacy and oracy in maths education.

Module Three: Strategies to Boost Oracy in the Mathematics Classroom

In this module, we will explore six strategies for boosting oracy in maths classrooms: Deliberate Vocabulary Development; Planning for Reading; Metacognitive Talk; Think Pair Share; Say it Again Better; and Elaborative Interrogation.
